Five apps, one trip, and the night I'd had enough
Backpackr exists because I spent a summer backpacking Europe with five apps open at once, and none of them knew about each other.
A personal note from the founder
I left with a 40-litre pack, a rail pass and a budget that felt generous until the second week. The plan was Amsterdam, then east through Prague, then down the Croatian coast. What I actually spent my evenings doing was app admin.
Skyscanner for the flight in. Hostelworld for the beds. Splitwise for what I owed my mate. Notes and Google Maps for the plan. WhatsApp and Instagram for the people. Five apps, five separate versions of the same trip, and every time one changed I had to re-do the other four by hand. I missed a hostel booking because the dates lived in one app and the flight in another. I found out what the trip had really cost me — bag fees, airport transfers, the 5am coach I hadn't budgeted for — three days after I got home.
The other thing I noticed: every genuinely useful thing I learned came from a person, not a platform. The free walking tour, the €4 dinner street, the hostel two doors down with better beds for less — all of it came from someone at a hostel bar. None of it was in any of the five apps.
On the waterfront in Split, in the last week of that trip, I sketched what the one app should have been: flights, beds, the day-by-day plan, the real running budget, work-exchange that pays for your bed, and the people in the city you're standing in — all sharing a single trip, so changing one thing updates the rest. That sketch is Backpackr. I'm building it because I wanted to use it.
I didn't want a better travel app. I wanted four fewer of them.

Questions we get a lot
Does Backpackr sell tickets or beds?
No. We show live prices and hand you off to the airline, hostel or seller that actually takes the payment. That keeps ticketing, refunds and cancellations with the party that can honour them.
How do you make money?
PackPass — a $5.99/month, $34.99/year or $8.99 one-trip membership — plus booking referral revenue from the sellers we link to. We don't sell personal data.
Is anything about safety behind the paywall?
Never. Reporting, blocking, privacy controls, safety information and emergency details are free for every account, permanently.
Where are the prices from?
Flights and stays come from live provider inventory. Anything we add on top — bag fees, transfers, daily spend — is labelled as an estimate, because real prices move.
Who is Backpackr for?
Independent budget travellers: gap-year backpackers, long-haul solo travellers, work-exchange volunteers and small crews planning a multi-city route together.
